Jon and Kate Plus Projection
It all started several years ago. I nice little show on TLC about a nice young Christian couple who were raising 8 small children. It was great, although the young wife was somewhat mean to her husband on camera- and maybe off.
Then came mass popularity for the show, million dollar Christian book deals, and dozens of companies clamoring to sponsor the Gosselin’s. There were wonderful vacations thrown at them that were video chronicled, even one where they renewed their wedding vows.
As all this was happening a strange wave of hate was brewing on the internet towards Kate. Women all over the country began to spread slander against Kate Gosselin on blogs and message boards. There were allegations of her being a horrible mother, being selfish and greedy, shunning her parents because her dad’s church didn’t donate baby furniture to her liking, and so on, and so on! It was as if all of these people thought that Kate Gosselin’s business was their own? But maybe it was, maybe it is. Afterall, didn’t this woman put her family’s personal life on display for all to see? When does reality TV become reality for it’s viewers, and when is it simply entertainment?
But all of the comotion couldn’t prepare the Gosselin’s nor the American people for the drama to come: the possibillity of infidelity on the part of Jon with a younger woman, then allegations of a love affair between Kate and her older bodyguard in retaliation.
The media went NUTSO-CRAZY! It was as if this was the biggest news event to ever take place? You couldn’t walk through a grocery story or browse the internet without being inundated with the latest Gosselin gossip!
Then something happened that would change the world forever and divert the public eye from Jon and Kate and their personal public-problems. It was the death of Michael Jackson and it was all that was on tv and the web for about 2 weeks. It actually almost shut down the internet it created so much buzz.
But now that much of the dust from Jackson’s death has settled, here we are again wih the Gosselin’s!
The rumor’s of their breakup, and the facts of their divorce are now old news and the new-news is ‘how terrible Jon’s new girlfriend is’ and ‘how greedy Kate is dealing with the 8 kids on her own’. There’s almost more coverage on the Gosselin’s now than there was several weeks ago.
So what’s my point? That people are fanatical about the drama of other people’s real lives. It’s reality tv at its finest- or its worst…What’s happening is that people are going through hard times right now, there is fear on all levels and they need something to avert their attention. So judgement takes place. They look to someone with public-personal problems and think,” I don’t have it that bad. These people are worse than me and deserve their problems. I’m not such a bad person afterall.”
They project their problems on Jon and Kate Gosselin, and subsequently judge them when they assume the Gosselin’s problems are worse than their own, and that the Gosselins are more evil than they.
This is sick! We fail to look at the log in our own eye, because we are two busy looking at the speck in the Gosselin’s. It’s time that we deal with our real life problems and let the Gosselins handle their own- and pray for these poor kids who will suffer from this more than anyone else.
