Active Cultures
Usually I write about more serious stuff. I have two blogs I’m hashing out now that I’ll probably put out in a few days. But until then, here’s something a little more fun:
Over the past 18 months or so I have fallen in love with frozen yogurt. Nearly every night I have a 30 ounce smoothie made with frozen yogurt. I love it hard, soft served, and blended into drinks, shakes, or smoothies. I actually believe that eating large amounts of yogurt before bed have helped me in my weight loss.
Here are some frozen yogurts that I’ve indulged in over the past few months that you should really try:
Umpqua Frozen Yogurt: It’s hard and can be purchased at various grocery stores in the NW. We usually get it at Walmart, Roth’s, or Winco. They do not carry it at Fred Meyer or Safeway. It comes in Raspberry Swirl (amazing! Vanilla and thick raspberry swirls), chocolate (too chalky), some sort of macadamia nut (never tried), and vanilla (Better than any vanilla ice cream I’ve ever had- seriously it’s great! Awesome for use in smoothies, shakes, and Sundays).
Sweet Papaya on Lancaster in Salem: This place is ok, but the yogurt is VERY “crystally” and hard, and is not soft and creamy like soft served frozen yogurt should be. There is about 16 self serve flavors to choose from with all sorts of toppings to put on. You are charged by the weight of your yogurt creation and it ends up being pretty spendy. My favorites are strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry.
Costco: Yes, Costco! They have a bomb frozen yogurt chocolate-vanilla swirl cone for only like $1.00. The lines are long, but the creamy goodness is worth it, especially with the large amount they give you for $1!
Active Culture in East Portland off of East Morrison: This place serves Yo Cream which is made in Portland and gets the creaminess factor of soft serve frozen yogurt perfect! The store secretly makes their own “special flavors” that are to die for. My favorite so far was the Blueberry, but the Strawberry and Orange-Vanilla Creamcicle are amazing as well! They usually have about 6 flavors each day with the ability to order shakes and smoothies made out of their frozen yogurt. Did I mention they make their own waffle cones?!- Yum!
Red Mango in Seattle (and nationwide): A Korean frozen yogurt joint that claims to be the only healthy “authentic” frozen yogurt joint- in the world? I don’t know what makes them so special, but the yogurt is TART- and that’s an understatement. It is somewhat creamy, but THE thing that stands out is it’s tartness. It’s good, but almost a little bit of a tart-overkill. Last night I tried the vanilla, a strange berry combo, and the pomegranate. The pomegranate was decent. I topped it with crushed graham crackers and organic oatmeal (you read that correctly). Red Mango has a large selection of unique toppings. It’s a good place, but comes across as being a little snobby.
What frozen yogurt or frozen yogurt joint do you love? Let me know. I’d like to become a conosur….

I think my fav is Red Mango. It tasted like actual yogert that was frozen… I had a vanillia with organic dark chocolate mini-chips. I’ll ask for half the amount next time.
I also love Active culture on E. Morrison. The nice lady who runs it probably thinks we are weird fr going there 3x in one week, but our local option I don’t think is very good.
