Giving Up Responsibilities

Here’s another post about an interesting conversation I overheard this past Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend.

An acquaintance of mine was talking to someone else about a mutual friend who has been very busy with all of her commitments in life. This mutual friend works two jobs (lots of hours and stress at one of them), has a child who is involved in two sports (which the mutual friend is very involved with), runs their home, and is very involved in ministry at her local church (which is a recent plant). This mutual friend of theirs is a great person, committed to what they do, and a huge asset to have on any team in just about any capacity. They however, are very tired with all of the things they are doing.

The person the acquaintance of mine was talking to, trying to come up with a solution to their mutual friend’s problems of being too busy, offered up a heartfelt solution; “Well then they should give up their church commitments!”

This sums up for me the American Church’s perception of church. Church, to most, is somewhere you go when it’s convenient. And if a sport, an activity, a job, or money get in the way; you simply skip out. Instead of seeing it as a Body that they are a crucial part of; they see it as just one more extracurricular activity. And with a perception of church like that, when their other activities get in the way, church becomes the bottom of the totem pole and gets overlooked until their schedules clear up for it.

Imagine if American Christians saw the Church for who She was; the Body and Bride of Christ empowered with His Spirit to do His work on earth. Our church buildings would be bulging each and every weekend and the buzz that would create in our communities would draw countless unbelievers in to witness the activity of these passionate “Christians”. We would see the Book of Acts realized in 21st Century America!

Too radical for you? Then you don’t fully comprehend the importance and scope of Christ and His Church. I dare you to make Him and His Church a priority, and you’ll see the will and power of God unfold all around you.

Well said. If only people realized that when you put God first, and God things, He gives you supernatural energy and ability to accomplish more than you ever thought was possible. Thanks for sharing that.
