CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishing, Michael Hyatt, shared in the second lab I went to at Catalyst West Coast Labs. Hyatt, a highly successful businessman, related and connected to his diverse audience by humanizing himself in showing us pictures of his family. At first I thought this was strange or egocentric but after thinking for a while, I saw that he used these personal things in his life to bridge a gateway into the hearts of those he was speaking to.

Hyatt shared that in order to maximize your influence over the long haul, that we must realize that the heart is the key to our influence.

He shared 5 Truths About Your Heart, that if you embrace, will change everything about your influence:

1. Your heart should be your #1 Priority. Proverbs 4:23

2. Your heart is the essence of your identity.

3. The condition of your heart directly impacts your influence.

4. You must learn to lead with your heart to expand your influence.

-Learn to open your heart on demand.

-When your heart’s closed, you can’t fake it.

-Your heart is closed when you’re distant, aloof, critical, demanding, and when people around you feel oppressed or diminished.

-Your heart is open when you focus more on others, are positive, are free, and empowered.

5. You must cultivate awareness and practice the disciplines of the heart.

He then shared three disciplines of the heart to follow, to check you heart.

A. Protect, Guard, and Pursue your relationship with Jesus.

B. Take time to rest and recharge.

C. Make time for a handful of close personal friends
