Arrogance

Often times in life, I have met people who I thought were arrogant, or rude. But after getting to know them beyond a surface level, I realize that they are far from being arrogant, but are dealing with other issues all together.

This past week, I was accused myself of being arrogant.

So here are some practical thoughts on what arrogance is, and what it is not. This will help you to not rush into judging those you come into contact with who you feel may be arrogant.

Arrogance is…

  • Thinking more highly of yourself than others.
  • Thinking you are “holier”, “better”, or “more righteous” than everyone else.
  • Thinking you have everything figured out, while everyone else is in the dark.
  • Wishing more people could be like you.
  • Trying to get all of the glory in every situation.
  • Knowing it all, and letting everyone know about it.
  • Having pity for those who have not achieved as much as you.
  • Doing the right thing, not because it’s right, but because other people will see you doing the right thing.

Arrogance is not…

  • Being shy or bashful.
  • Not being a “people person.”
  • Having a low self-esteem.
  • Overcompensating for a personal weakness or embarrassment.
  • Being bold in proclaiming the truth for the benefit of others.
  • Sharing a personal opinion with someone else that you don’t expect them to share in return.
  • Guarding yourself from others for fear of repeating a past hurt.
  • Acting “appropriate” when everyone else has crossed the line.
